Can PDF compression make a file larger?

PDFit does not deliver a larger replacement. If safe compression cannot reduce the file, the original document is returned.

Choose compression for the destination and the document

Compare file size and readability rather than assuming that every PDF can reach the same size target.

A PDF is too large for an email or upload form

The destination rejects the attachment because its file size exceeds the stated limit.

What to do

  1. Check the destination limit and compress your original PDF with Balanced first.
  2. Compare the downloaded file size with the limit. If it is still too large, try Strong from the original file and inspect small text and images.
  3. If neither result fits, use Extract PDF pages to keep only the pages the recipient needs, then check the new file size.

What to expect

You get a file whose actual size you can compare with the destination requirement, or a smaller document containing only necessary pages.

Check before you share

  • There is no fixed-MB target control or guaranteed reduction. Already optimized PDFs may not shrink; the compressor keeps the original when its candidate would be larger. Email systems may also limit the total message size.

Keep a scan readable while reducing its size

Small numbers, stamps, or photographed text become difficult to read after strong compression.

What to do

  1. Start again from the original PDF and choose Print for more image detail, or Balanced for a size-and-quality compromise.
  2. Open the result and compare the smallest important text, signatures, and image detail with the original at the same zoom.
  3. Use the clearest acceptable result. If pages are unnecessary, remove them separately instead of repeatedly compressing a degraded copy.

What to expect

You can choose between the available presets using the parts of the document that matter to the recipient.

Check before you share

  • Compression can reduce image detail and cannot restore detail missing from the original scan. Print may produce less size reduction than Strong.
